Ponting expresses concern for Siraj following his intense send-off to Head in Adelaide

Dubai, Dec 11 (NationPress) Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels that the confrontation between Travis Head and Mohammed Siraj during the second Border-Gavaskar Test in Adelaide stemmed from a misunderstanding and described the events as accidental in nature. The incident unfolded in the 82nd over of Australia’s first innings when Siraj bowled out Head, who was on 140, with an impressive yorker, delivering a fiery send-off and making aggressive gestures as he walked back towards the stands. Head responded to Siraj before departing to a standing ovation from the home crowd.

Subsequently, the Adelaide crowd expressed their discontent by booing Siraj whenever he fielded in the deep or bowled, disapproving of his confrontation with Head.

“In hindsight, I believe it was unintentional how everything transpired. I don't think there was any ill will intended initially. The way it unfolded and the misinterpretation of the situation contributed to how it concluded,” Ponting remarked during a recent episode of the ICC Review.

Despite Siraj's quick and intense reaction, Ponting thinks it was a natural reaction for a fast bowler under pressure, especially since he had only taken one wicket at that time.

“I understand that Travis mentioned he said, ‘Well bowled’ initially. Siraj, obviously, wasn't pleased about being hit for six over the deep backward square just before that,” he noted.

“Rohit (Sharma) would likely expect these fast bowlers to react in such a manner. When they are under pressure and getting hit, followed by a wicket, it’s expected for them to be animated.”

However, when Siraj exchanged words with Head post-dismissal, Ponting admitted he was concerned for the Indian bowler. “It wasn't a major issue. I was in the commentary box at that moment. As soon as I witnessed the send-off, I genuinely became worried for Siraj. I know how the umpires respond to such situations. Umpires and referees dislike seeing send-offs directed towards the dressing room,” the Australian legend added.

Interestingly, the two players were seen engaging in a friendly discussion when Siraj came to bat during the second innings of the Test on Sunday, indicating that the matter had been resolved. Ponting praised both players for swiftly addressing the issue.

“Both players have now expressed their views on what transpired. It was wonderful to see them conversing. When Siraj came out to bat and Travis was positioned at short leg, they were clarifying what had occurred out there. They were communicating to clarify the situation,” he stated.

Nonetheless, both Siraj and Head received one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct, with Siraj also incurring a 20 percent fine on his match fee.
