How is Cameron Green's International Career Shaping Up?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 24 (NationPress) Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has shared his thoughts on Cameron Green’s developing international career, labeling the all-rounder as one of Australia's most captivating long-term talents, even though his Test performances have been under the microscope.
Green has struggled during the Ashes series, which Australia has already clinched after the first three Tests. In these three matches, he managed just 76 runs and took only two wickets, with limited opportunities to bowl.
Ponting remarked that despite Green's increasing experience, gauging his overall effectiveness in Test cricket remains a challenge.
“It’s genuinely tough to assess him as an international player at this moment. His average is below 30 in Australia now, and his career average hovers just over 30,” Ponting stated on The ICC Review.
“He has achieved two Test match centuries in around 30 Test matches. He has undergone back surgery, and his bowling pace is likely not what it was a year ago,” he added.
Since debuting against India in Adelaide five years back, Green has participated in 35 Tests, accumulating 1641 runs at nearly a 33 average, along with 37 wickets.
“However, there’s a very complete package there if everything aligns. We’ve witnessed him play some outstanding innings.
“He scored a phenomenal century in New Zealand last year and has another century in India, even though it was on a very flat pitch,” Ponting remarked.
Green's first Test century came in Ahmedabad, where he scored 114 under pressure against India, while his best performance occurred in March 2024, when he hit an unbeaten 174* in Wellington, leading Australia to a significant 172-run victory.
Beyond individual achievements, Ponting emphasized the positive influence Green has on the Australian team, noting that consistency in his approach is crucial moving forward.
“Conversations with players and coaching staff reveal they genuinely appreciate what he contributes to the group,” Ponting highlighted.
“His primary challenge is to discover the right method and style for himself, figure out what works, and then commit to it over an extended period.”
Ponting suggested that Green’s inclination to continually seek solutions can sometimes complicate matters, advocating for straightforward guidance instead.
“He’s known to be a deep thinker about his game and tends to make frequent adjustments.
“My advice would be to keep things as straightforward as possible, reflect on his domestic cricket performances, and apply that game at the Test level while trusting it for a while,” he concluded.
