New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) Pharma mogul Adar Poonawalla has announced his intention to place a strong and competitive bid to acquire ownership of the reigning champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

"In the coming months, we will be submitting a STRONG and COMPETITIVE offer for RCB, one of the most remarkable teams in the IPL," stated Poonawalla, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Pune's Serum Institute of India (SII) and is the Chairman of Poonawalla Fincorp, in a recent post on his official 'X' account.

London-based Diageo, the parent company of United Spirits Ltd, initiated the sale process for the team in November last year, with a valuation around 105 million USD. This decision gained momentum following a tragic incident during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in June 2025, which resulted in the death of 11 fans.

Praveen Someshwar, Managing Director & CEO of United Spirits Ltd, stated: “RCSPL has been a significant and strategic asset for USL. However, it does not align with our core alcohol business. This decision reflects USL’s and Diageo’s commitment to continually assess their portfolio in India, aiming for long-term value for all stakeholders while prioritizing RCSPL’s interests.”

RCB, who celebrated their first IPL title last season, is also considering relocating home matches away from Bengaluru for the 2026 season. The DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur are under discussion as potential venues for their home games.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association has urged the team to maintain the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as their home ground for the IPL. Besides Poonawalla, Hombale Films, led by Vijay Kiragandur, is also vying for ownership of the franchise, although no official comments have been issued from their side.

RCB has been a foundational franchise of the IPL since its inception in 2008, featuring legendary players like Virat Kohli, Anil Kumble, and AB de Villiers throughout its history.
