Wolverhampton, Dec 31 (NationPress) The forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Matheus Cunha, has been issued a two-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) after facing charges of misconduct due to his improper actions following the team's 1-2 loss against Ipswich Town at Molineux Stadium on December 14.
This incident transpired after the final whistle when Jack Taylor netted a last-minute goal for the visitors. Cunha was seen elbowing an Ipswich staff member and subsequently seizing their glasses. For his actions, the Brazilian forward has also incurred a fine of £80,000.
"Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two matches and fined £80,000 following the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday, December 14, 2024."
"The forward was charged with misconduct, as it was alleged that he behaved in an improper manner after the final whistle. He accepted the charge, and the penalties were later enforced by an independent Regulatory Commission. Detailed written explanations regarding this case will be released in due time," the FA's statement read.
This loss to Ipswich Town was the tipping point for the Wolves management, leading to the dismissal of head coach Gary O’Neil and his coaching staff after the match. As a result of the suspension, Cunha will miss the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest and the FA Cup third-round match away to Bristol City. However, he is set to return for his team's league match against Newcastle United on January 15.
Cunha has been a vital asset for the Wolves this season, ranking as their leading scorer with 10 goals and contributing four assists, tying for second most.
The recent appointment of Vitor Pereira has proven beneficial for the team, highlighted by victories over Leicester City (3-0), Manchester United (2-0), and a draw against Tottenham Hotspur (2-2), marking a positive start to his tenure with the club.
