London, Sep 22 (NationPress) Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar has been included in Surrey’s squad for their upcoming County Championship clash against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl.

The 26-year-old, who registered for the concluding phase of the County Championship season earlier this month, was absent from Surrey’s prior home matches at the Kia Oval against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.

He is now set to participate in the season's finale against Hampshire, who have recently acquired Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar for their final fixtures.

Chahar, representing Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy and having played seven matches for India in white-ball formats, adds valuable experience to Surrey’s thin spin lineup. He has claimed 87 wickets in 24 first-class games at an average of 26.12, with best match figures of 9/148.

His credentials in T20 cricket are also impressive. After beginning his IPL journey with Rising Pune Supergiants, Chahar gained recognition with the Mumbai Indians, contributing significantly to their championship victories in 2019 and 2020. He subsequently played for Punjab Kings before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2024.

Regarding his new adventure in England, Chahar expressed: “I’m thrilled to join Surrey for this week’s match. I aim to make a positive impact and assist the team in their final game of the season.”

Currently, Surrey are missing spin options Will Jacks and Cam Steel, both out due to injuries.

Director of Cricket Alec Stewart welcomed Chahar’s arrival as a timely boost: “Bringing Rahul into the squad provides us with another spin option at the Utilita Bowl. We anticipated player absences for the closing stretch of the season and tried to plan accordingly, considering the likely pitches and the opponents we face.”

Stewart also mentioned that Surrey’s initial strategies had to be modified. “We had originally planned for Sai Kishore to return for the later stages of the season, but a finger injury requiring surgery has unfortunately left him unavailable,” he noted.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the strategic significance of Rahul Chahar's inclusion in Surrey's lineup. In periods of player absences, the ability to adapt and reinforce the squad with experienced players like Chahar could be pivotal for Surrey's performance. This move reflects the dynamic nature of county cricket and the importance of having depth in the team.
