Kolkata, Nov 15 (NationPress) Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has achieved another remarkable milestone by surpassing the 4,000-run threshold in Test cricket, making him just the fourth player in history to accomplish this feat along with claiming 300 wickets in the longer format. During the opening Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Jadeja reached the 4,000-run mark by scoring his 10th run, joining the ranks of cricket legends such as Ian Botham, former India captain Kapil Dev, and New Zealand star Daniel Vettori.
Botham concluded his Test career with 5,200 runs and 383 wickets, while Kapil amassed 5,248 runs along with 434 wickets across 131 matches. Vettori rounded off his red-ball career with 4,531 runs and 362 wickets in 113 matches.
As India took on South Africa in the first Test of their two-match series, Jadeja commenced his innings on Day 2 needing just 10 runs to reach this impressive milestone. He achieved this in the 44th over of India’s first innings, becoming the second-fastest player to do so, completing the milestone in 87 Tests—only behind Botham, who reached it in 72.
Jadeja’s total in Tests includes six centuries and 27 half-centuries, alongside an impressive tally of 331 wickets at an average of 25.25, which features 15 five-wicket hauls.
Earlier that day, KL Rahul also crossed the 4,000-run mark, becoming the 18th Indian to do so. It took him 3,977 days since his debut to achieve this milestone, making him only the second Indian batter, after Mohinder Amarnath (6,214 days), to take longer to reach 4,000 Test runs.
Rahul was dismissed shortly after, scoring 39 runs off 119 balls.
Additionally, India’s Test returnee Rishabh Pant surpassed legendary batter Virender Sehwag to set the record for the most sixes by an Indian in Tests, totaling 91. Pant achieved this in the 38th over, smashing Keshav Maharaj for the maximum over mid-off.
At the end of the first session, India stood at 138/4, reducing the Proteas’ lead to just 21 runs.
