IPL 2026: RCB Unveils Debutants Abhinandan and Duffy, Opts to Bowl First Against SRH
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 28 (NationPress) The reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), have given debuts to fast bowlers Abhinandan Singh and Jacob Duffy as captain Rajat Patidar chose to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the inaugural match of IPL 2026 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
This match also signifies the return of competitive cricket to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, marking the first game held there since May 17, 2025, in light of the tragic stampede during RCB's title celebration on June 4 that resulted in 11 fatalities.
Significant modifications have been implemented at the stadium, and RCB players will don black armbands to pay tribute to those who lost their lives last season, while they also wore number ‘11’ jerseys during their practice session ahead of this match.
Amid the enthusiastic cheers from RCB supporters, Patidar expressed, “It’s the start of the season, so we’ll observe how the pitch behaves. We have many positives from last season. We’re not just defending, we aim to win in IPL 2026 as well.”
“We have a wealth of talented players, and our backup squad is impressive too. Everyone is fit, and the medical team is attentive to our needs. Thank you to our fans for your unwavering support. We will strive to claim victory again,” he added.
On the flip side, SRH, the champions of 2016, will be led by Ishan Kishan, the franchise’s second-youngest captain after Kane Williamson, as regular captain Pat Cummins continues his recovery from a lumbar stress injury. Kishan, making his captaincy debut in the IPL, also announced that Punjab batter Salil Arora will be making his debut in this tournament.
“I’m feeling optimistic, and we wanted to field first as well. We trust our instincts. There’s no need to change our approach just because it’s the IPL; we just want to execute our plans,” Kishan stated.
“While Pat is one of the finest bowlers, everyone looks in great form, and I believe we will be victorious. Salil is in the playing eleven, and I just want him to keep it simple and trust his instincts,” he concluded.
