RCB's Coach Andy Flower Excited for IPL 2026 Challenge
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 27 (NationPress) The reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), are primed for the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as they prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru this Saturday. In anticipation of the match, head coach Andy Flower emphasized that the team is adopting a renewed perspective as they embark on the new season, despite their status as defending champions.
“Certainly, we are the champions from last year, but this year presents a fresh slate, and we’re eager to embrace the challenge. One fundamental truth of life is the inevitability of change. Our team has evolved; the players are a year more seasoned, and our rivals have adapted as well. The conditions may also differ, making this season's challenges distinct from the previous one, and we are looking forward to that,” stated Flower.
Reflecting on their past experiences at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Flower acknowledged that the team has gained crucial insights from previous matches played at this venue.
“Last year, we stumbled in our first three games at Chinnaswamy, and we’ve learned from those setbacks. This year, conditions may vary, so we need to evaluate that. However, playing at your home ground should ideally give you an edge in understanding the intricacies of the conditions compared to your opponents. We’ve been training here and discussing these details extensively, which makes me hopeful that we’ll have a slight advantage over our rivals on our home turf,” he added.
Flower also highlighted the leadership dynamic within the team, praising captain Rajat Patidar and vice-captain Jitesh Sharma.
“It’s remarkable that in Rajat’s inaugural season as captain, he led RCB to victory. He is a well-liked figure and commands great respect among the players. He maintains a calm demeanor, which the bowlers find reassuring. Jitesh is an excellent deputy as well—his energy, tactical insight, and perspective from behind the stumps contribute significantly to the team’s strategy,” Flower remarked.
On the topic of Virat Kohli’s form, Flower expressed strong confidence in the veteran batsman’s mindset and readiness for the upcoming season. “Virat is mentally in a great space. He is very self-assured yet intensely motivated, and observing him practice, he appears to be at the peak of his abilities,” Flower commented.
Discussing the bowling lineup, Flower voiced optimism regarding the domestic seamers in the squad. “We are pleased with our Indian seamers. Rasikh has improved significantly since last year and has dedicated himself to honing his skills. We are also excited about our new recruit Mangesh and have been encouraged by Abhinandan’s recent progress. All three possess qualities that make them well-prepared, should they get the opportunity to play in this tournament,” Flower noted.
Lastly, Flower provided an update on Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. “Hazlewood arrived yesterday and looks fit. It’s fantastic to have him back in the dressing room and participating in our meetings. While he won’t be ready for tomorrow's match due to his recent arrival, we will closely monitor his fitness and look forward to his return to the IPL soon,” he concluded.
