How Will RCB Cope Without Ellyse Perry in WPL 2026?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 8 (NationPress) The absence of star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry in the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season will have a profound effect on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), according to former India captain Anjum Chopra. Ellyse, who ranks as the second-highest run-scorer in WPL’s history, was retained by RCB for INR 2 crore for this season. However, her withdrawal has left a considerable void in their lineup, although they have secured pace-bowling all-rounder Sayali Satghare as her replacement.
In a similar vein, seam-bowling all-rounder Annabel Sutherland has also stepped away from the competition for DC due to personal reasons, with Alana King coming in as her substitute.
“I believe RCB is more significantly affected by Ellyse’s exit. While Annabel's absence is also notable, given her versatility, I would argue that RCB faces a more substantial challenge. Losing Ellyse Perry is a big blow for them,” Anjum shared in an exclusive interview with IANS as the competition is set to begin.
She noted the increasing demands of the cricketing calendar, stating, “Fans may miss seeing her in this WPL, but players must also manage their personal commitments as the travel and competition can be taxing.”
With Perry unavailable, Anjum highlighted the tough choices RCB faces in filling their four overseas slots, particularly regarding who will open the batting alongside Smriti Mandhana. Contenders like Georgia Voll and Grace Harris are in the running, along with uncapped opening option Gautami Naik.
“The question for RCB will be who partners with Smriti at the top. If they opt for Georgia Voll, can they also fit in Nadine de Klerk? With only four foreign players allowed, balancing the lineup will be crucial,” Anjum explained.
“Should they choose Lauren Bell, they risk losing out on Georgia or a spinner like Linsey Smith. These decisions will be pivotal, but it’s exciting to see new talent emerging in the WPL,” she concluded.
