New Delhi, Nov 24 (NationPress) Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble speculates that the hefty price of Liam Livingstone might have played a significant role in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru opting to release him into the IPL 2026 auction pool.
Livingstone was a part of RCB during their triumphant IPL 2025 season after being acquired for Rs. 8.75 crore at the previous mega auction. However, his performance was less than stellar - accumulating only 112 runs in eight innings with a strike rate of 133.33, which included one half-century, and managed to take two wickets in nine overs with an economy rate of 8.44.
The upcoming IPL 2026 auction, scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, will reveal whether RCB or any other franchises are keen to sign him. “Releases are always difficult decisions. Liam Livingstone is a player I have enjoyed collaborating with, and he performed exceptionally well for Punjab in IPL 2022, likely his finest IPL season. He has the ability to change the course of a game in just a few overs with his explosive batting,” Kumble remarked.
“His unique skill set includes bowling leg spin to right-handers and off spin to left-handers, as well as being a strong fielder, making him a well-rounded player. Unfortunately, he didn’t shine in the last IPL season with RCB and also missed selection for the England team.”
“Otherwise, I’m confident other franchises would be interested. His elevated price tag likely contributed to his release. RCB is also in search of backup options, specifically an overseas fast bowler and an Indian fast bowler, to bolster their main bowling lineup featuring Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood. This requirement for additional bowling strength could be another reason behind this challenging decision,” Kumble stated on JioStar.
Saba Karim, the former India wicketkeeper-batter and national selector, expressed doubts about RCB’s choice to release young batter Swastik Chikara. “It’s an exciting time for RCB to finally be recognized as the defending champions. Regarding their auction strategy, they could potentially reacquire Liam Livingstone in the mini-auction if his price remains reasonable.”
“I’m also taken aback that they chose not to retain Swastik Chikara, who proved to be an excellent acquisition last season after his outstanding performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I anticipated he would get a chance, but he didn’t participate in any matches and is now not retained. If RCB aims to enhance their batting lineup, there are numerous uncapped Indian batsmen they could pursue in the auction to strengthen their squad depth for the upcoming season,” he added.
