Mumbai, April 18 (NationPress) After the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) made the decision to rename Divecha Pavilion Level 3 to the 'Rohit Sharma Stand', the Indian captain expressed that he never imagined receiving such an accolade. Rohit has been an integral part of Mumbai cricket and has successfully led India to consecutive ICC titles, including the T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025.
Recently, Rohit was appointed the brand ambassador for the T20 Mumbai League, which was launched on Friday. The 2025 edition of the Mumbai Premier League is set to commence on May 26.
During a press conference announcing his role as the brand ambassador for MPL, Rohit stated, “I never dreamt of something like this when I began my cricket journey. I recall the days I wanted to watch the Mumbai Ranji team play.”
“In 2003-04, after our U-16 training at Azad Maidan, we would cross over to watch the Mumbai Ranji players. Those experiences were unforgettable. To think about how far I've come since my first game, and now having a stand named after me is surreal. It’s an emotional moment, and I feel incredibly grateful for this honour. When you start, you never know how long your career will last. Now, being able to enter the stadium and see a stand with my name is truly moving.”
Having represented India since 2007, Rohit was part of the team that clinched the 2007 T20 World Cup. He has played in 159 T20I matches, 273 ODIs, and 67 Test matches. Last year, he concluded his T20 career after the World Cup victory in Barbados.
The T20 Mumbai League, organized by the MCA, is one of India’s leading domestic franchise-based T20 tournaments. Since its launch in 2018, the league has been a stepping stone for emerging talent, with players like Shivam Dube, Tushar Deshpande, and Shams Mulani making significant advancements in their careers following notable performances in earlier seasons.
“This initiative has provided a tremendous platform for players. In the last two seasons, some players have gone on to play for IPL teams and some are now representing India. Many skilled cricketers in India lack the right platform. Mumbai cricket is offering opportunities to numerous players who may not get a chance in Ranji. This tournament will attract attention, with many viewers. It’s an excellent opportunity to play in the IPL through this tournament,” Rohit added.
