New Delhi, May 7 (NationPress) India’s captain Rohit Sharma has made a surprising announcement regarding his immediate retirement from Test cricket, while confirming his intention to continue participating in ODIs. This decision paves the way for a new leader to take charge of the Indian team ahead of their upcoming five-match Test series in England starting June 20.
In an Instagram story shared on Wednesday evening, Rohit displayed his Test cap number 280 and stated, “Hello everyone, I would like to inform you that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
Rohit faced significant challenges during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for India. He recorded an average of just 6.20 over five innings and opted out of the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His performance was also disappointing in India’s 3-0 home series loss against New Zealand, where he averaged only 15.16.
According to IANS, Rohit’s retirement aims to lay the groundwork for a future Test team, especially as the upcoming England tour marks the beginning of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
“This decision has been in the works for quite some time, despite his claims during a TV interview at the Sydney Test that he wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. Therefore, the signs were evident. Consequently, the selection process for the Test team for the upcoming England tour has been postponed by two weeks,” a source informed IANS.
Rohit concludes his Test career that began with a century on debut against the West Indies in Kolkata in 2013, amassing 4,301 runs across 67 Tests at an average of 40.57, which includes 12 centuries and 18 fifties. He captained India in 24 Tests, achieving 12 wins and 9 losses.
In June 2024, Rohit had already announced his retirement from T20Is after India triumphed over South Africa by seven runs in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. With his retirement from Tests, Shubman Gill emerges as the leading candidate for the next Test captaincy, as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee seeks to inject new talent into the squad.
Gill, aged 25, has served as vice-captain in white-ball formats. Considering Jasprit Bumrah's unavailability for all five Tests in England, he is well-positioned to lead India in the Test arena. Currently, he is captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT), who are leading the IPL 2025 points table.
