New Delhi, May 8 (NationPress) Punjab Kings Head coach Ricky Ponting honored Rohit Sharma following the veteran's announcement to retire from Test cricket after 67 matches in the whites. Having led India to the World Test Championship Final in 2023, the opener revealed his decision to step away from the longest format on Wednesday.
"Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honor to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format," Rohit shared on his Instagram story alongside a picture of his Test cap no. 280.
In light of the 38-year-old's significant career move, former Australia captain and current PBKS coach Ponting congratulated Rohit for his remarkable achievements in Test cricket.
"Well, Rohit Sharma, my great friend. We go way back to the days of the Mumbai Indians, playing alongside you and witnessing your growth as a captain and leader. I just want to say congratulations on an unbelievable Test career. You should be very proud of everything you have achieved in Test match cricket, and I wish you all the best for your future," Ponting expressed in a video shared by PBKS on their social media.
Former India cricketer Suresh Raina also shared his sentiments for his ex-teammate on X, stating, "Rohit Sharma's legacy extends beyond the numbers. A true champion, an inspiring leader, and a passionate player who gave his all to the game. His impact on Indian cricket will resonate for years to come."
Rohit, who took the reins as the Indian skipper in red-ball cricket in 2022, concludes his Test career with 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, which includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.
Among his notable achievements over a decade-long career in whites were two ICC World Test Championship Final appearances and India's historic Test series victory in Australia in 2020/21.
Rohit had already stepped back from his T20I career after leading India to the T20 World Cup title last year.
After also guiding the team to the ICC Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, Rohit confirmed that he will continue to lead the squad in the 50-over format.
