New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) Former Indian left-arm fast bowler RP Singh reminisced about the unforgettable celebrations that ensued after the 2007 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory, declaring that the parade in Mumbai post their arrival was far beyond what he could have possibly imagined.
Singh took 12 wickets across seven matches as MS Dhoni-led India clinched the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in September 2007. “We celebrated our win in South Africa, then arrived in Dubai, where we received a few congratulations for lifting the trophy. When we landed in Mumbai, we believed we had accomplished something special, but the celebration parade exceeded anything I had envisioned,” said Singh.
“The roads were blocked, and the crowd was throwing various items, including chocolates and even a small cake tossed towards me with a request to cut it. I told them, ‘Don’t do this, it might fall.’ Even though it was raining, the energy from the crowd was electric, with people celebrating passionately alongside us,” Singh remembered during an episode of ‘Cheeky Singles’ on JioHotstar.
He also shared a delightful anecdote from a Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka and his home state Uttar Pradesh in Meerut, featuring the legendary Rahul Dravid. “During the Ranji Trophy match in Meerut, Rahul Dravid scored an impressive 199 runs.
“That evening, we had dinner at someone’s house while following India’s match, where Sachin Tendulkar was batting steadily. People around us were urging, ‘Sachin should speed up his play.’ But he was playing according to the game’s circumstances. Rahul bhai leaned over and whispered, ‘If they’re saying that about him, imagine what they would’ve said to me!’” he recalled.
On a lighter note, Singh, who has played 14 Tests, 58 ODIs, and 10 T20Is for India, mentioned being confused with other famous personalities, including Rohit Sharma. “I’ve been mistaken for Rohit Sharma multiple times. It doesn’t end there; someone even referred to me as ‘George Clooney’ on social media! I told them, ‘Now that’s a stretch!’”
