New Delhi, May 2 (NationPress) Following the unfortunate exit of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) from the IPL 2025 playoff contention after suffering a heavy 100-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians (MI), former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund expressed his views on the franchise's spending strategy. He remarked that if it were his decision, the funds allocated for acquiring Nitish Rana and Vaibhav Suryavanshi would have been better utilized in securing a couple of quality bowlers.
Prior to the auction, RR parted ways with notable players such as Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Avesh Khan. Unfortunately, they did not bring these players back and instead opted for Jofra Archer, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Tushar Deshpande, Kumar Kartikey Singh, and Akash Madhwal, while retaining only Sandeep Sharma, none of whom have been in peak form.
“The only bowler who has made a significant impact is Archer, who was their highest investment. Regrettably, their choices for Indian players didn't pan out as expected. Tushar Deshpande, who was purchased for a hefty sum of 6.5 crores, found himself on the bench during this crucial match,” Mukund elaborated.
“In hindsight, investing in two additional batters like Nitish Rana (4.2 crores) and Vaibhav Suryavanshi (1.1 crores) seems miscalculated. Personally, I would have directed that budget towards acquiring a few solid bowlers,” he added.
Mukund emphasized the previous success RR had with bowlers like Avesh Khan, Chahal, Ashwin, Boult, and Sandeep Sharma, calling it a well-rounded bowling lineup. “You should ideally secure at least two or three quality bowlers, yet they chose not to retain any except Sandeep, which has led to their current predicament,” he commented on ESPNCricinfo.
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra echoed Mukund's sentiments, highlighting that RR's lack of a reliable all-rounder and sixth bowling option also contributed to their deficiencies in both batting and bowling depth, especially in utilizing the impact player rule.
“The Rajasthan Royals were the only team without a sixth bowling option, despite the Impact Player rule. Riyan Parag contributes a few overs, but he isn't the best option available,” Chopra pointed out.
“I expected them to address this gap by acquiring an all-rounder in the auction. Instead, they failed to target what they truly needed, which is evident in their bowling department,” he concluded.
