Moscow (Russia), Nov 28 (NationPress) The Executive Committee of the International Judo Federation (IJF) has made a significant decision to permit Russian judokas to participate in international events under the Russian flag, along with the country's national anthem and symbols, as confirmed by the IJF.

"Sports serve as a vital connection that brings together individuals and nations, especially in challenging conflict situations. Athletes should not be held accountable for the actions of governments or other national bodies. It is our responsibility to safeguard the sport and support our athletes," stated the IJF in a release issued late Thursday, as reported by Xinhua.

"Russia has historically been a dominant force in global judo, and its complete return is anticipated to enhance competitiveness at all tiers while adhering to the IJF's principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect," the IJF further stated.

The first event where Russian judokas will compete under their national flag is the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi from November 28 to 30. Meanwhile, Belarusian athletes were authorized to compete under their flag as of June.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has imposed sanctions on both Russia and Belarus since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In September 2023, the IOC Executive Board determined that Russian and Belarusian athletes could compete as neutral individuals in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

Furthermore, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly also voted to restore the full membership rights of the National Paralympic Committees of Belarus and Russia.

The IOC has confirmed that Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN)—those with a Russian or Belarusian passport—who have qualified through the current qualification processes of the International Federations (IFs) will be permitted to compete at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games under the same conditions applicable to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
