Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined ₹24 lakh for a second slow over-rate offence this season, following CSK's 89-run defeat to Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The loss officially ended CSK's campaign in IPL 2026, marking a third consecutive season without a top-four finish.

The Penalty and What It Means

The IPL confirmed the sanction under Article 2.22 of its Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate offences. Because this was CSK's second offence of the season — the first having been recorded in Match 18 — the penalties were significantly steeper than a first-time breach.

According to the IPL's official statement, Gaikwad was fined ₹24 lakh. The rest of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will each be fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is the lesser amount.

Gujarat Titans produced a commanding all-round display, posting 229/4 before bowling the five-time champions out for just 140. The 89-run margin was emphatic, and the result strengthened GT's push for a top-two finish — which would guarantee them two shots at the final via Qualifier 1.

For CSK, the defeat confirmed what their season-long inconsistency had foreshadowed: a third straight exit at the league stage, following their last title win in 2023.

Ruturaj Reflects on a Difficult Season

Speaking after the match, Gaikwad acknowledged the turbulence his side faced across the campaign. 'Well, tough season to start, especially the hat-trick of losses. And then after that, once we found that momentum, obviously we found guys playing at the right spot, the right combination, everything started working. And then, a couple of injuries again and again,' he said.

The CSK skipper also pointed to the absence of key players as a destabilising factor. 'Didn't really help much, especially missing out Jamie and, another allrounder in Ramakrishna Ghosh, kind of unsettled our playing 12. Not many people actually buy the fact that we are a young team, we are in a transition phase and, not a lot of players who are experienced enough, especially in the toughest competition,' he added.

CSK's Transition Challenge

The three-season top-four drought is a stark departure for a franchise that has historically been among the IPL's most consistent. CSK have won five IPL titles, but the current squad is navigating a generational shift, with several experienced stalwarts no longer in the mix. Injury disruptions to key all-rounders compounded the challenge this season, leaving the combination unsettled at critical junctures.

With the IPL 2026 playoffs now in sight for other franchises, all eyes turn to whether CSK's management will use the off-season to address the depth and experience gaps that Gaikwad himself has flagged.
