IPL 2026: CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad Penalized for Slow Over-Rate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 12 (NationPress) The captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ruturaj Gaikwad, has incurred a fine due to his team's slow over-rate during the IPL 2026 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Gaikwad was penalized 12 lakhs for this violation after his team secured their first victory of the season, following three consecutive defeats.
The IPL stated, "As this was the first offence for his team this season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct concerning minimum over-rate violations, Gaikwad was fined Rs 12 lakhs."
He is the third captain to face consequences for a slow over-rate, following Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings and Shubhman Gill of Gujarat Titans.
Iyer was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate in two successive matches; the first was against Gujarat Titans on March 31, followed by another breach in the next game against CSK on April 2.
Gill was penalized during the match against Delhi Capitals on April 8.
In the match itself, Sanju Samson delivered an impressive unbeaten 115, while Jamie Overton executed a brilliant performance with figures of 4-18, leading CSK to a 23-run victory over DC, marking their first win of IPL 2026.
Samson, the star of India’s 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup victory, illuminated Chepauk with the season's first century, scoring 115 off just 56 balls, including 15 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 205.36, helping CSK set a formidable total of 212/2.
Despite the challenging target, DC began their chase strongly, with Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul surpassing the 50-run mark in the fourth over. However, the match's momentum shifted significantly when CSK claimed three wickets within three overs.
Overton's exceptional performance, with 4-18—currently the best figures of the season—ensured that the visitors were ultimately bowled out for 189 in 20 overs.
