Chennai, May 1 (NationPress) The captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), Shreyas Iyer, has been fined following his team's violation of the slow over-rate rule during their recent four-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk on Wednesday.
Iyer incurred a fine of Rs 12 lakh as this marked PBKS' initial slow over-rate offense of IPL 2025, according to the tournament's regulations. Additionally, PBKS was required to position an extra fielder within the circle ahead of the 19th over.
As stated in the IPL's announcement, “Shreyas Iyer, Captain of Punjab Kings, has been penalized due to his team's slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday.”
“Since this was his team's first violation of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offenses, Iyer was fined INR 12 Lakh,” the IPL statement continued.
Previously, several other captains including Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals), and Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) have also faced fines for similar slow over-rate offenses this season.
Yuzvendra Chahal's impressive 4-32, which included the season's first hat-trick in IPL 2025, played a critical role in limiting CSK to 190 runs after Sam Curran's stellar performance of 88 runs from 47 balls. With contributions from captain Shreyas Iyer (72 runs from 41 balls) and Prabhsimran Singh (54 runs from 36 balls), PBKS successfully chased the target with two balls remaining.
This victory propelled PBKS to six wins from 10 matches, allowing them to ascend to second place with 13 points, overtaking three teams with 12 points in an intense points table race.
In contrast, CSK has become the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention, languishing at the bottom of the standings with only two wins in 10 matches.
