The inaugural Winter National Championship took place in 1959 in Bombay, introducing the Ruia Trophy and Holkar Open Pairs.
The Ruia Trophy, recognized as a hallmark of bridge excellence in India, was established in 1959 in memory of the late Shri Ram Niwas Ruia. It serves as a perpetual trophy awarded to the champions of the Team of Four in the Winter National Bridge Championship. The champions and runners-up earn a spot in the Indian Selection Trials. Since 2005, this trophy has been referred to as the Ruia Gold Trophy. Currently, two Team of Four events are conducted concurrently, featuring an additional accolade—the Ruia Silver Trophy.
