Melbourne, Jan 19 (NationPress) World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to her third consecutive Australian Open quarterfinal with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory against Mirra Andreeva on Sunday.
This triumph marked Sabalenka's 18th straight win at the Australian Open, tying her with Victoria Azarenka for the longest winning streak at the event this decade. She aims to secure her third Australian Open title in a row.
The two-time defending champion, who faced defeat from Andreeva during their only previous encounter at a major—Roland Garros last year—successfully broke the 17-year-old's serve four times while maintaining her own serve, enhancing her head-to-head record to 4-1.
Utilizing the fast conditions within Rod Laver Arena under the midday sun, Sabalenka struck 15 winners against 11 unforced errors and delivered three aces, as reported by the WTA.
“It’s always tough matches against Mirra; she’s so young but so mature and plays such great tennis. I’m super happy to get through this challenging match in straight sets. Today, I came out on the court aiming to put the ball back, and it was flying like a rocket,” Sabalenka remarked.
“I was really pleased with my performance today, and I hope the conditions continue to favor me throughout the tournament,” she added post-match.
Since 2020, Sabalenka has reached the quarterfinals or better in 11 out of the 15 Grand Slam tournaments she has participated in, achieving this feat in nine consecutive tournaments.
