Melbourne, Jan 23 (NationPress) World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka fought her way into the fourth round of the 2026 Australian Open after facing a significant challenge at Melbourne Park, defeating Anastasia Potapova 7-6(4), 7-6(7) at Rod Laver Arena on Friday.
The four-time Grand Slam champion, who has not suffered a loss in the third round of any Grand Slam since Roland Garros 2022, was tested in a two-hour, two-minute match, marking her longest appearance at this year's AO.
Sabalenka, who led with a score of 7-6(4) and 4-0, had to save four set points in a tense second-set tiebreak to secure her victory.
"She played remarkable tennis. I felt like I was always on the defensive, and honestly, there are days when you just need to be present, to fight and strive to return the ball. Even when my emotions were all over the place, I managed to battle for every point... and I'm extremely pleased to have achieved this victory. It was a tough match, and I genuinely enjoyed it," Sabalenka shared during her post-match interview.
Potapova aimed to become the first Austrian player to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park since Barbara Schett in 2000.
Having recently claimed her 22nd title at the Brisbane International, Sabalenka looks to extend her current eight-match winning streak into 2026.
