Can Aryna Sabalenka Overcome Potapova's Challenge? Mboko Triumphs Over Tauson
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Melbourne, Jan 23 (NationPress) The reigning World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka fought hard to advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open 2026, narrowly defeating Anastasia Potapova with a score of 7-6(4), 7-6(7) at Rod Laver Arena on Friday. This match represented her toughest challenge at Melbourne Park thus far.
Having not lost a Grand Slam third round match since the 2022 Roland Garros, the four-time major champion engaged in a lengthy battle that lasted two hours and two minutes, marking her longest match at this tournament.
Sabalenka, initially leading 7-6(4), 4-0, faced a significant comeback from Potapova, eventually having to save four set points during the tense second-set tiebreak before securing her victory.
"She played phenomenal tennis. I was constantly on the defensive, and honestly, there are days when you just need to be present, fight hard, and focus on returning the ball. Even though I was emotionally challenged, I managed to fight for every point... and I’m extremely grateful to have won. It was a true battle, and I genuinely enjoyed it," Sabalenka shared in her post-match interview.
Potapova was eager to become the first Austrian to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park since Barbara Schett in 2000.
Sabalenka, who recently secured her 22nd career title at the Brisbane International, aims to extend her eight-match winning streak in 2026.
She has now reached the fourth round or better in the last 13 Grand Slam events she has participated in, dating back to her third-round exit at the 2022 Roland Garros.
In the upcoming fourth round, the 27-year-old Sabalenka will face her first seeded opponent of the tournament, Victoria Mboko from Canada, whom she has yet to compete against.
During her debut at the Australian Open, the 17th seed Mboko had to fight hard to secure a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 victory against the 14th seed Clara Tauson.
After clinching the opening set in a tiebreak despite holding a break advantage twice, Mboko rebounded from an early break to establish a 7-6(5), 5-3 lead.
However, Tauson showcased her best form, winning five consecutive games to take the second set and gain an early break in the third.
Mboko quickly broke back, unleashing consecutive backhand winners to secure her match victory from a 30-30 position in the final game.
