New Delhi, July 4 (NationPress) Mohamed Salah expressed his heartfelt condolences on social media on Friday following the tragic loss of his Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car accident on Thursday. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time in the Spanish region of Zamora. As reported by local authorities, Jota's vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake another car due to a tyre blowout, leading to a devastating fire. Unfortunately, both Jota and his brother perished at the scene.
"I am truly at a loss for words. Just yesterday, I never imagined something could deter me from returning to Liverpool after the break. Teammates come and go, but not in this manner. Accepting that Diogo won’t be there when we return will be incredibly challenging.
"My thoughts are with his wife, children, and of course, his parents, who have suddenly lost their sons. Those who were close to Diogo and Andre will need all the support possible. They will always be remembered," Salah shared on social media.
According to an ESPN report, the funeral is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. local time in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, after the bodies returned to their hometown on Thursday. The service will be held at the Matriz de Gondomar church, located 33 kilometers from Porto. A wake is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time on Friday.
At just 28 years old, Jota was a pivotal player for both Portugal and Liverpool. Since joining the Premier League side in 2020, he has been instrumental in their success, helping secure major titles including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. During his tenure at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 matches and was well-regarded for his work ethic and knack for performing in critical moments.
For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He was part of the team that won the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal triumphed over Spain in the final. Just weeks ago, the forward celebrated that victory with his teammates.
Teammate Endo Wataru also took to social media to share the sentiment echoed globally - ‘You will never walk alone’.
"Jots, I still can’t wrap my head around this. I don’t want to accept it. You were an exceptional player and an even better person. Your memory will live on forever. My thoughts are with your wife, children, and all your family and friends. Love you, Jots. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. You will never walk alone," Endo expressed on social media.
