New Delhi, July 3 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has conveyed his heartfelt condolences following the heartbreaking demise of Diogo Jota, the Portuguese forward for Liverpool, and his brother André Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.
"It’s difficult to fathom that Diogo is no longer with us! He was a remarkable player who infused life into every match he played! One of the greatest of all time. My thoughts are with the family during this unimaginable time, especially losing both Diogo and his brother in such a tragic incident. Wishing strength to all who cared for them," Yuvraj shared on X.
The collision occurred around 12:30 am local time in the Zamora region of Spain. As per authorities, Jota’s vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake another car, leading to a tyre blowout that caused the vehicle to ignite. Tragically, both Diogo and André were pronounced dead at the scene.
At just 28 years old, Jota was a pivotal player for both his national team and Liverpool. Since joining the Premier League side in 2020, he played an instrumental role in securing significant victories, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. During his tenure at Anfield, he netted 65 goals in 182 appearances and was celebrated for his diligence and knack for performing in key moments.
Representing Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He was part of the squad that claimed the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal triumphed over Spain in the final. Just weeks ago, he had celebrated that victory with his teammates.
André Silva, the younger sibling, was also a footballer and played for Penafiel in Portugal's second division.
Both Liverpool FC and the Premier League expressed their profound sadness regarding the incident. "Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the untimely passing of Diogo Jota. We have been informed that the 28-year-old tragically lost his life due to a road traffic accident in Spain, alongside his brother, André," stated Liverpool in an official announcement.
