London, July 12 (NationPress) Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, recognized for his imitation of Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'Siu' celebration after taking wickets, expressed his deep emotions upon hearing the tragic news of Diogo Jota's passing. The talented forward from Portugal and Liverpool lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in the Spanish region of Zamora on Thursday.
Siraj had the opportunity to honor Jota on the field during a match on Friday, where he dismissed Jamie Smith after lunch and signaled the number 20—representing Jota's jersey number at Liverpool—as a tribute to his memory.
“Upon learning of Diogo Jota's untimely death, I felt a profound sadness as a fan of Portugal, particularly because Cristiano Ronaldo is part of that team,” Siraj shared in a video released by BCCI on X.
“Life is incredibly unpredictable. We strive for our goals, yet we remain unaware of what the future holds. There is no certainty in life. It was a shocking experience. Today I achieved some wickets, and I wanted to express that tribute in his honor. It was my way of showing respect.”
Siraj concluded the day with bowling figures of 2-85, while spearhead pacer Jasprit Bumrah secured five wickets, helping to dismiss England for 387 runs in their first innings.
Bumrah attributed his impressive performance to lessons learned from the previous tour of England, adapting his strategy to effectively utilize the conditions.
“Reflecting on the slope from the last tour, I realized it didn’t assist me. My takeaway was to disregard that during this match, and I maximized the potential of the new ball in these warmer conditions,” Bumrah explained.
In reply, opener KL Rahul played a resilient innings, remaining not out on 53, leading India to 145/3 at the end of 43 overs. Rishabh Pant, who is also not out on 19, partnered with Rahul to add 38 runs for the fourth wicket after the quick dismissals of Karun Nair (40) and captain Shubman Gill (16).
