Sanju Samson has emerged as the marquee signing Chennai Super Kings needed after a slow start to IPL 2026, according to former Australian captain Aaron Finch. The wicketkeeper-batter, traded from Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, began the tournament with three single-digit dismissals but has since accumulated 402 runs in ten innings at an average of 57.42 and a strike rate of 167.50, including a match-winning 87 not out off 52 balls against Delhi Capitals on a challenging pitch.

Early struggles gave way to dominance

Samson's opening matches sparked concerns among CSK supporters, with the franchise losing all three games in which he registered low scores. However, the T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament has since posted three fifty-plus scores in seven innings, stabilising CSK's middle order and providing the explosive finishing the franchise had lacked.

Finch on the pressure and the turnaround

Finch attributed the initial wobble to the immense pressure of joining a storied franchise as a high-profile acquisition. "Two games in T20 is nothing," Finch said on ESPNcricinfo. "To go right through a season ultra-consistent is so difficult. You probably can't underestimate the pressure on somebody going into a team like CSK. Being a huge marquee signing particularly when you have traded someone like Jadeja out of the side as well."

Finch noted that Samson's recent form represents him overcoming the psychological burden of proving himself at a new club. "Although he had a dream run at the end of the T20 World Cup and then he's come in at CSK and missed out a couple of times, there will still be some pride and pressure and almost some feeling that you can tend to overplay it slightly in your own head that you want to get to a new franchise and really lay down a marker and say 'I'm here'. This is what you're traded for and the superstar that you've been crying out for. So, the fact that he's batting on a different level is great to see," Finch added.

CSK's playoff hopes brighten

Following the victory against Delhi Capitals, CSK remained in sixth place in the standings, trailing the four teams ranked between second and fifth by only two points. Samson's resurgence has coincided with the franchise's improved fortunes, suggesting his form could prove decisive in their push toward the playoffs.
