Mumbai, Aug 19 (NationPress) The appointment of Shubman Gill as vice-captain for the forthcoming Asia Cup in the UAE has once again cast doubt on Sanju Samson's prospects within the Indian T20 lineup.
Despite being a long-standing captain of the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, the inclusion of Gill raises concerns about Samson's place in the playing XI.
Speculation has intensified due to the order in which chairman of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, announced the players. Agarkar named Gill and wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma at the top, placing Samson and Rinku Singh towards the end. Observers interpret this as a sign that Gill may open alongside Abhishek Sharma in India's opening match against Oman in the Asia Cup.
With players like Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel likely occupying the No.3 to No.7 positions, it seems there is no room for Samson at the top of the order. This has led many to believe that Jitesh was prioritized over Samson as the wicketkeeper and late-order batter. Jitesh could serve as a finisher, potentially edging out Rinku Singh. Notably, Samson has shown impressive form lately as an opener.
However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar remained non-committal on this issue, stating that it is ultimately the head coach and captain who will decide the playing XI. He emphasized that Gill's recent performances in the IPL and the England Test series do not guarantee a spot in the playing XI.
"The captain and coach will make the decision regarding the optimal balance for the team. Once we arrive in Dubai, we will gain more clarity. With numerous options available, both Shubman and Sanju have been in remarkable form in recent months," Agarkar elaborated.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav added to the speculation by asserting that Jitesh has rightfully earned his place in the team. He mentioned that he had discussed with the RCB wicketkeeper batter about his transformation as a cricketer.
"After the last T20 World Cup, we discussed focusing on the journey rather than worrying about milestones. He's been a completely different cricketer since then, performing exceptionally well in the IPL and domestic tournaments," said Suryakumar.
Jitesh has been training in Dubai for the Asia Cup, showcasing his aggressive batting style.
Suryakumar also defended the selection of Harshit Rana, citing his impressive IPL performance. Rana was recently part of the India A team in England and was retained as a backup for an injured bowler, even though he didn't get to play.
"He has performed admirably in the IPL. He was the Man of the Match in the last game he played for India. We trust his abilities, knowing he can deliver," Suryakumar stated.
With mixed signals from the skipper and chief selector, Samson is likely to experience some anxious moments leading up to the Asia Cup, pondering what more he needs to do.
