Mitchell Santner: Ready to be the Villains for T20 Glory
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, March 7 (NationPress) New Zealand's captain, Mitchell Santner, expressed that the BlackCaps are fully prepared to take on the role of the antagonists if it allows them to quiet the home crowd and secure the title in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final against India, scheduled for Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The New Zealand team has consistently performed well in ICC white-ball tournaments over the past few years. This marks their fifth final appearance in such tournaments within the last 11 years. However, they have yet to secure a title in their previous four tries. Consequently, the prevailing narrative around the team has often depicted them as the good-natured underdogs who may not always claim the trophies but certainly win the hearts of fans.
When inquired about embracing the “villain” status and potentially breaking the hearts of a billion Indian fans to claim the championship, Santner affirmed that the team is ready to make any sacrifices necessary to achieve victory.
"I wouldn't mind winning a trophy. Our group has shown remarkable consistency in these tournaments because we focus on our game and not on the pressure from the situation or our opponents. We aim to perform to the best of our ability," he stated during the pre-match press conference.
"As a cohesive unit, our approach remains unchanged. We are aware that we may not be the favorites, but we are undeterred. If we execute our strategies effectively and deliver a robust team performance, we can put ourselves in a favorable position to lift the trophy. I wouldn’t mind breaking a few hearts for once to achieve that," he added.
Santner also mentioned that he has not yet inspected the pitch but anticipates a high-scoring game. "I haven't seen the wicket yet; it's still covered. However, one can reasonably expect it to be flat and conducive to high scores," he noted.
The captain praised Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has displayed stellar form throughout the tournament and played a pivotal role in India's semi-final victory against England with his exceptional bowling performance.
"Bumrah should certainly be in everyone’s discussions given his recent performances. England found it quite challenging to score off him, and he was undoubtedly a game-changer for India the other night. We anticipated this, as he is a world-class bowler," he concluded.
