New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) - After being overlooked during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 auction, Sayali Satghare has turned her journey around by clinching the trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) this year and making her debut at the renowned WACA Stadium in Perth. It's been a whirlwind few months that even the wildest imagination couldn't conjure.

Currently, Sayali, fresh from competing for West Zone in the Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy, is directing her energy towards a venture she believes could revolutionize women's cricket in Mumbai—the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women's League, set to launch later this year.

Reflecting on her remarkable 2026, Sayali recalls how it commenced with her stepping in for Ellyse Perry in RCB’s lineup, following a year in which all her appearances for India were in 2025. Teaming up with the impressive Loren Bell, she was pivotal with her swing bowling, securing nine wickets in six matches, contributing to RCB's second title.

"The past few months have genuinely felt like a dream. Being unsold at the auction, then receiving a call as a replacement for RCB was monumental for me. I was thrilled just to be part of the squad," Sayali expressed.

"I never anticipated winning the trophy. Initially, my joy was simply in being part of the WPL. Winning it, along with my long-standing admiration for RCB, made it all the more special."

"To receive the Test team call-up was the cherry on top. My ultimate dream has always been to represent India. Making my Test debut in Perth was a monumental moment for any fast bowler—a genuine dream come true," she shared with IANS in an exclusive interview.

Sayali, who exhibited remarkable poise under pressure during her debut, acknowledged the initial nerves but found her rhythm as the match progressed. After India was bowled out for 198 on day one, she posed significant challenges to Georgia Voll, eventually sending her leg stump flying with an impressive swing delivery.

After dismissing Ellyse twice in quick succession, she nearly trapped Alyssa Healy lbw in her second spell, but the review revealed the ball would have gone outside off-stump. However, she soon had her reward, as Alyssa, in her final international match, was caught in the next over.

"Our bowling innings began at night, so I anticipated the ball would swing. It was about placing it in the right spots and letting the conditions enhance the swing," she noted.

"I was indeed nervous at first, but as the game unfolded, I relaxed and focused on my bowling strategy, which ultimately aided in my wicket-taking," she added.

Despite fewer chances to represent India, Sayali credited the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) camps in Bengaluru and India A exposure for honing her abilities.

"The camps and India A exposure, especially our tour to Australia two years ago, equipped me with the experiences necessary to assess my standing and areas for improvement as I aimed to reach the highest level of play," she said.

As she gears up for the inaugural season of the three-team T20 Mumbai Women's League, Sayali emphasized its significance for the upcoming generation of Mumbai cricketers. "This initiative by MCA is a fantastic opportunity for all players to exhibit their skills on a larger platform, fostering individual growth and paving the way for future representation in India and the WPL," she stated.

Comparing it to the men's competition, which has consistently unearthed talent since its revival last year, Sayali asserted, "This marks Mumbai's inaugural season for women. As we've observed in the men's game, this league has brought forth thrilling talents."

"I am confident that women’s cricket in the city will experience the same surge. We will undoubtedly discover many fearless youngsters capable of leading Mumbai cricket to more trophies in the future. This league is an excellent platform to discover new talents across the city, which often goes unnoticed due to lack of exposure," she elaborated.

With the men's team having secured the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times, Sayali perceives the women's game as on the brink of a similarly illustrious era. For context, Mumbai triumphed in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons and also clinched the 2026 Women's U-15 One Day Trophy.

"Certainly, the launch of this league signifies the beginning of building a more substantial legacy, akin to the men’s achievement of 43 Ranji Trophy wins. We aim to replicate this success in women's cricket, and this is merely the start of our journey," she remarked.

"The exposure and experiences here, coupled with the overall opportunities, will aid players in their development and ultimately assist Mumbai in securing more victories in women's cricket competitions," she concluded.

For aspiring women cricketers observing her impressive rise, Sayali's advice hinges on the essential virtues of patience and perseverance. "I firmly believe that hard work is irreplaceable. Even during challenging times or when opportunities are scarce, you must continue to put in the effort."

"Eventually, the right opportunities will present themselves, and being prepared is key. Opportunities can arise unexpectedly, and if you are ready, you will perform. The more dedicated and honest work you put in will surely translate into performance," she added.

"Stay committed to working hard and improving day by day. There is ample exposure available now, so if you continue to excel, further opportunities will come—be it in the WPL or even for India. However, a strong foundation and the right mindset to learn and grow are crucial," she concluded.
