New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) Jatin Paranjape, the former cricketer for India and national selector, believes that the strategy employed by the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team to utilize Shafali Verma as a bowler during their 52-run victory over South Africa was exceptionally clever, contributing significantly to their success at the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.
During the championship match at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, captain Harmanpreet executed a surprising move in the 21st over by entrusting the ball to Shafali, who proved to be a formidable option on the pitch with her slower deliveries.
This decision bore fruit quickly as Shafali claimed the wicket of Sune Luus on her second ball. In her following over, she dismissed veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, effectively crippling South Africa’s pursuit, leading them to be bowled out for 246 in reply to India’s total of 298/7.
“On the field, we displayed bravery and courage. Our left-arm spinners performed admirably. I believe it was a brilliant strategy to let Shafali bowl a few overs; they kept that information well-concealed, which severely disrupted the South African team. Overall, we should highlight the outstanding teamwork,” stated Paranjape, a member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, in an interview with IANS on Monday.
Shafali recorded impressive figures of 2-36 in seven overs, alongside scoring 87 runs off 78 balls, including seven fours and two sixes, earning her the title of Player of the Match. Paranjape, who co-founded KheloMore, commended Shafali’s performance for helping India set a strong total, despite believing the team could have reached 330-340 runs.
“I thought India fell short by about 20 to 30 runs. However, it was clear from our batting that the senior players were actively communicating with their partners. For instance, Smriti was continually talking to Shafali to keep her calm. Shafali played exceptionally well. It’s challenging to step into a World Cup semi-final and final after only playing domestic cricket,” he remarked.
“She exhibited great self-confidence and wasn’t afraid to play her natural game. I believe she could have pushed India to a total of 330-340, yet I still felt we were 20 to 30 runs short,” he concluded.
