Dubai, March 5 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer and previous coach Ravi Shastri awarded Shreyas Iyer the 'Fielder of the Match' medal for his spectacular throw during India's Champions Trophy semifinal victory against reigning champions Australia on Tuesday.

Following Virat Kohli's commendable 84 runs, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul delivered a thrilling performance to secure India's spot in their third consecutive Champions Trophy Final after a gripping run-chase against Australia in Dubai.

When Alex Carey appeared poised to dominate for Australia, Shreyas' remarkable fielding play proved crucial in clinching a vital wicket. Carey, who scored 61 runs, seemed ready to push Australia beyond the 275-run threshold, but Shreyas' direct hit from the boundary dismissed the left-hander and disrupted Australia's momentum.

Post-victory, India's fielding coach T Dilip praised the players in the locker room for their exceptional fielding and announced the contenders for the best fielding accolades, before inviting former coach Shastri to present a medal to Shreyas.

"In knockout matches, presence and awareness are essential; it requires a fielding unit that proactively influences the game. This is precisely what we accomplished... The manner in which we cut off angles in the field, ensuring that no second run was easy on the outfield, demonstrated our top-tier fielding effort, a blend of skill and determination," stated Dilip in a video shared on BCCI.tv.

Shastri remarked, "Individual brilliance can only take you so far; it is the collective team effort that drives you to the finish line. Today, two champions were on display; in a pressure game, character was shown, and teamwork along with flashes of brilliance on the field made all the difference."

India concluded at the top of Group A, winning all three matches against Bangladesh. With the semifinal victory, India also avenged their previous loss to Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.

The team will now face the winner of the second semifinal between South Africa and New Zealand in Dubai on March 9.

"You are undoubtedly the best team in this tournament so far; just one more match to go," Shastri concluded.
