Does Rashford Deserve a Move to Barcelona? Former Man Utd Striker Sheringham Weighs In

New Delhi, July 16 (NationPress) Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham expressed his views on Marcus Rashford’s potential transfer to FC Barcelona, labeling the situation as "soul-destroying".

Reports suggest Barcelona is Rashford’s favored choice; however, Sheringham contends that Rashford is not worthy of such an advancement.

"When you evaluate where Marcus Rashford stands as a professional athlete, you aim as a young player to reach the pinnacle and perform for clubs like Manchester United, and once you achieve that, you value it. You don't just throw it away by expressing a desire to leave," Sheringham articulated to Sky Bet.

The ex-Man Utd player further drew parallels between Rashford's situation and that of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who departed Arsenal following a dispute with Mikel Arteta to join Barcelona.

“I find this entire situation quite soul-destroying, especially when I reflect on how I worked hard to earn the honor of playing for such a prestigious football club. To hear someone vocalizing a desire to leave—much like Aubameyang at Arsenal—does not sit well with me, and I sincerely hope Rashford does not secure the transfer he is yearning for. In my view, transitioning from Manchester United to Barcelona represents an elevation that he has not earned,” he added.

Rashford has made 15 appearances in the Premier League for Man Utd during the 2024/25 season, scoring in head coach Ruben Amorim’s inaugural match—a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town on November 24—before netting two additional goals in a 4-0 triumph over Everton the following week. However, he has not participated since being excluded from the squad for the Manchester derby on December 15, after a disagreement with the Portuguese head coach, prior to his loan move to Aston Villa in February.

Manchester United is facing challenges in the transfer market, needing to make substantial changes before making significant investments. With players like Antony, Jadon Sancho, Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho openly stating their desires to leave Old Trafford this summer, Sheringham believes United’s struggle to sell stems from other clubs being aware of United's predicament.

"Spending money on players is simple, but recovering it is a different story. While things may seem calm, I suspect there is much happening behind the scenes at Manchester United. Other clubs are aware of United's circumstances. They've indicated a desire to offload around five players, which invites other clubs to make unreasonable offers,” Sheringham remarked.
