New Delhi, Oct 28 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Shreyas Iyer, who incurred a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday, is currently stable but remains under careful observation.
Iyer sustained the injury while attempting to catch a ball from Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey during the match held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was swiftly taken to the hospital for assessment and was subsequently admitted to the ICU.
According to a statement from BCCI issued on Tuesday, “Shreyas Iyer experienced a blunt trauma to his abdomen, resulting in a spleen laceration accompanied by internal bleeding on October 25 during the third ODI against Australia.”
“The injury was quickly diagnosed, and the bleeding was halted immediately. His condition is now stable, and he is under continuous observation. A follow-up scan conducted on Tuesday, October 28, has indicated significant progress, and Shreyas is on the path to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in collaboration with specialists in both Sydney and India, will keep a close watch on his recovery.”
Initially thought to be a rib cage problem, the injury was later confirmed to be more severe, as the scans revealed a laceration of the spleen, leading to Iyer's ICU admission in a Sydney hospital.
However, sources revealed to IANS that Iyer has since been moved out of the ICU, and the team management is maintaining close communication with him to monitor his recovery.
India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also shared his thoughts earlier today, ahead of the five-match T20I series against Australia.
“We reached out to him right after we learned about his injury. I was the first to call, but then I discovered he didn’t have his phone. I contacted our physio, Kamlesh, and he confirmed that Shreyas is stable. Even on the first day, he seemed to be doing well. We’ve been in touch for two days now. His responses indicate he is stable,” he stated regarding Iyer’s condition.
“There are doctors attending to him, so things are looking positive. He’s responsive and conversing normally. He mentioned he would take care of himself for a few more days. The fact that he is communicating with everyone is a good sign,” he added.
