Mumbai, March 11 (NationPress) India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill landed in Mumbai after securing the ICC Champions Trophy title in Dubai. He was spotted exiting the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday evening. India triumphed over New Zealand by four wickets in the final on Sunday, marking their third title in the eight-team tournament. With this victory, India has become the most successful team in the Champions Trophy, eclipsing Australia’s achievement of two titles.
The 25-year-old opener amassed 188 runs in five matches, featuring an unbeaten century against Bangladesh in the opening game. Additionally, he played a vital innings of 46 runs alongside Virat Kohli (100 not out) against their rivals Pakistan in India’s six-wicket victory.
This marked Gill’s first ICC title, having missed the chance to gain experience with the silverware during last year’s T20 World Cup in Barbados, where he was not included in the 15-member squad and was placed on the four-player reserve list.
Following Sunday’s match, Gill shared his thrill at overcoming the final hurdle this time after finishing as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in Ahmedabad.
“It felt incredible, for the most part. I was enjoying Rohit bhai’s batting from the sidelines. We conversed frequently, and the partnership was crucial for us. He advised me that it doesn’t matter how many balls are left, just keep your eyes on the scoreboard, and you must play until the end,” he stated.
“It’s definitely very gratifying. We missed out on the last tournament we competed in during 2023. Winning this one is a surreal experience; achieving eight consecutive ODI victories starting with the ODIs against England is an unbelievable feeling,” he expressed after the climax of the tournament.
On Monday, India’s captain Rohit Sharma also returned to Mumbai, while head coach Gautam Gambhir arrived in New Delhi.
Rohit Sharma contributed a score of 76, and with notable contributions from Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and K.L Rahul, India successfully chased down New Zealand’s total of 251/7, clinching the final by four wickets with an over to spare at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. This victory marks India’s third title in the Champions Trophy, solidifying their status as the most successful nation in this esteemed ICC event.
