Shubman Gill: Winning the 2027 ODI World Cup is My Ultimate Dream
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) Shubman Gill, the captain of India's Test and ODI teams, expressed that the prospect of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa frequently occupies his thoughts. He emphasized that clinching the global trophy remains his ultimate aspiration. India narrowly missed the title in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, finishing as runners-up against Australia.
As the next edition of this prestigious tournament approaches, focus will be on whether Gill can guide the team to victory across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. “At times, it certainly does. That is the ultimate goal. We felt so close last time here in India,” Gill shared during a panel discussion at the BCCI's Naman Awards in New Delhi.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Gill recounted his childhood memories of watching India triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy in England, culminating in lifting the same trophy in Dubai in 2025, which he described as a dream come true.
“Watching my idols—Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ashwin, and Dhoni—win the final against England in 2013 was a special experience. As a child, I aspired to replicate that joy,” he stated.
“Dreaming of representing your country and winning ICC trophies is what drives you. Achieving one of those dreams felt surreal, and winning the Champions Trophy after 12 years will always hold a special place in our hearts,” he added.
Discussing the challenges of captaining India in both Tests and ODIs, Gill mentioned that he simplifies the immense responsibility by focusing on his primary role as an opener. “It’s easier said than done, but concentrating on my responsibilities is key. My main duty as a batsman is to score runs,” he explained.
“If I can contribute with runs, everything else will follow. Ultimately, we play to win, and I focus on how I can help the team achieve that,” Gill concluded.
