Harare, May 3 (NationPress) Experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza is set to rejoin Zimbabwe’s squad for their forthcoming one-off Test against England, commencing at Trent Bridge on May 22. This four-day match will be significant as it will see Zimbabwe play a red-ball Test in England for the first time since 2003.
Raza last featured in a Test match for Zimbabwe against Afghanistan in Bulawayo earlier this year. He missed the subsequent red-ball series against Ireland and Bangladesh, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Over his 18 Test appearances, Raza has accumulated 1286 runs, including one century and nine fifties, along with claiming 38 wickets.
He replaces Johnathan Campbell in the squad, while Clive Madande returns from injury, taking over from Nyasha Mayavo as the back-up wicketkeeper. Fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri returns to the team in place of leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa, as Zimbabwe opts for an additional pace option to adapt to the anticipated seam-friendly conditions in England.
Head coach Justin Sammons expressed confidence, stating, “In terms of performance, I expect us to play to a standard that can compete with one of the best teams in the world. I really want to see the guys walking out there believing that they belong, embracing and enjoying the moment.”
This landmark Test against England will be succeeded by another four-day match against South Africa from June 3-6 at Arundel, which will assist South Africa in their preparations for the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s from June 11-15.
The Zimbabwe Test squad, led by Craig Ervine, is anticipated to depart for England on May 9 to acclimatize to the conditions ahead of the eagerly awaited Test against the Ben Stokes-led team.
