Leicester, May 13 (NationPress) Zimbabwe commenced their training in Leicester on Monday following their arrival in England for a significant Test match against the home team, which is set to occur at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from May 22 to 25. This one-off fixture symbolizes Zimbabwe's return to the longest format of the game on English soil for the first time in over 20 years.
Before facing England, Zimbabwe will refine their strategies with a four-day warm-up match against a First-Class Counties XI from May 15 to 18 at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester.
Zimbabwe's head coach, Justin Sammons, expressed optimism as the players were in high spirits after their initial training session at their temporary venue. "It was a long journey from Harare to Leicestershire. So, we designated Sunday for recovery, and Curtly (Diesel, the strength and conditioning coach) ensured the players were focused on that," he stated.
"Today marked our first session on the field and in the nets. It was a fantastic technical session, and the players are meeting their targets. Overall, I’m pleased with the outcome."
Despite the lengthy travel and new surroundings, Sammons noted that the players were embracing the opportunity to compete in one of Test cricket's most esteemed arenas.
"There’s great energy within the group. They are genuinely thrilled. Competing in Test cricket in England is a fantastic opportunity," he remarked. "This naturally invigorates the team, and they are eager to commence the challenge!"
This visit to England coincides with Zimbabwe's efforts to revitalize their red-ball program, which follows a closely contested series draw against Bangladesh.
"This is the essence of the sport. Competing against the best is what drives you, and England is certainly among the premier Test teams globally," Sammons added. "This will help us assess our current standing and identify areas for improvement moving forward.
"The players believe they belong here, and I look forward to seeing them take the field with confidence and pride."
With 10 days of preparation leading up to the Nottingham Test, including the warm-up match, Sammons is confident that Zimbabwe will be adequately prepared for the event.
"Our preparation is on point. We have 10 days of quality training ahead. We couldn’t ask for more," he commented. "A warm-up game is always beneficial and exciting. As we move toward Nottingham, we will have a few more practice sessions. From a preparation standpoint, we have no complaints."
After the Test against England, Zimbabwe will face South Africa in a four-day match from June 3 to 6 at Arundel, which will be crucial for the Proteas as they gear up for their ICC World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s from June 11 to 15.
