Eric Simons urges T20 bowlers to dictate play, not react to batters
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons has called for a fundamental mindset shift among T20 bowlers, urging them to seize the initiative and dictate terms rather than passively responding to opposition batting. Speaking in a video released by the IPL, Simons stressed that bowlers must view themselves as the architects of each delivery's outcome, capable of forcing batters into predetermined uncomfortable situations.
"As a bowler, I've got the ball in my hand. I must make the batsman play in a certain way. We start the dance, if you like, as bowlers. They've got to react to what we do," Simons said, emphasising the psychological and tactical advantage that possession of the ball confers.
The case for proactive bowling
Rather than observing and reacting to a batter's strengths, Simons advocated for identifying vulnerabilities and constructing field placements and tactics around exploiting them. "We've tried to look at batting and say, how do we make a batsman play rather than watch what he does and react. Where are his vulnerable areas? Can we make him score to our protection?" he explained.
This shift from reactive to proactive represents a departure from traditional T20 bowling philosophy, where bowlers often adjust on the fly. Simons argued that controlling the narrative of each delivery — determining not just whether a batter scores, but how and where — is the key to regaining mastery in an era dominated by aggressive batting.
Clarity and execution over outcomes
Central to Simons's philosophy is the importance of pre-match preparation and unwavering tactical clarity. "You need to go into the middle with absolute clarity around your tactics and field placements. You can't go out there uncertain and try to make decisions on the fly," he stressed.
Notably, Simons decoupled execution from outcome, arguing that bowlers should commit to a plan even if a batter plays an exceptional shot. "If we agree as a team to bowl to a certain field and tactic, and a batsman hits a really good ball for six, we must understand it's still the right tactic. Our job is to execute the plan, not take full responsibility for the outcome," he said.
Adopting fearlessness from batters
Simons also called for bowlers to embrace the same fearlessness that has become the hallmark of modern T20 batting. Rather than viewing aggressive batting as a threat, he framed it as an opportunity. "There's a fearlessness to batting now. That same fearlessness around tactics must shift into the bowlers. We should see aggressive batting as an opportunity to take wickets and slow teams down," he noted.
CSK's position and next fixture
CSK currently occupy the sixth position with eight points from nine matches in the ongoing IPL season. The franchise will face Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, seeking to climb the standings through improved bowling execution under Simons's tactical framework.
