Visakhapatnam, March 30 (NationPress) After achieving his first T20 fifer that led the Delhi Capitals to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025, seasoned left-arm bowler Mitchell Starc expressed that as bowlers age, they must discover innovative methods to dismiss batters during a match.
During the match at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Sunday, Starc recorded an impressive 5-35, enabling DC to restrict SRH to just 163 runs in 18.4 overs. Notably, three of his wickets—Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Travis Head—were taken during the power-play, putting SRH on the defensive, while his remaining two wickets fell towards the end of the innings.
“There’s no room for ego among bowlers nowadays. As a bowler, you need to think outside the box. You have to try things that you wouldn’t typically do. It was great to contribute to the win today; we will build on this,” stated Starc post-match.
“Opponents are aware of my usual tactics, so I have to think creatively. As an experienced player, it’s essential to find new ways to dismiss batters. I experimented with different deliveries today, and I believe it was quite effective,” Starc commented after the match concluded.
Starc has now achieved the record for the second-best bowling figures by a DC bowler in IPL history, following veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who achieved 5-17 against the Deccan Chargers in the inaugural season of the tournament in 2008.
He also reflected on the Axar Patel-led DC maintaining their unbeaten status in the competition thus far. “Today was a strong performance with the ball, in the field, and with the bat. We played exceptionally well.”
“It’s a fresh group of players, and they have been remarkable. Playing alongside new teammates is a pleasure; it’s a talented young squad, and I look forward to more matches with them.”
Tristan Stubbs, who scored an unbeaten 21, mentioned that the batters aimed to keep their approach straightforward on a pitch that posed challenges for batting. “The pitch seemed a bit slow, and it appeared to spin throughout the day, making the cutters effective. It wasn’t the easiest surface to bat on.”
“We maintained simplicity and positioned players where they felt it was necessary. At the 10-over mark, we discussed conserving our energy due to the heat. The team balance is impressive; Faf batted beautifully at the top, showcasing an amazing performance.”
Stubbs concluded by sharing that he is keen to absorb as much knowledge as possible from DC mentor Kevin Pietersen. “The newcomers have performed excellently, and I hope we can keep the momentum going. I’m putting in my best effort to learn from him (Kevin Pietersen). I ask numerous questions. Trust me, I’m striving to improve.”
