New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Two-time Olympic medallist P.V Sindhu advanced to the quarterfinals of the India Open 2025 following a second-round victory against Japan's Manami Suizu here on Thursday. The 29-year-old, currently ranked World No. 14, dominated her opponent with scores of 21-15 and 21-13 in a brisk 46-minute match at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
The Indian athlete showcased her prowess from the outset, heading into the break with a commanding 11-6 advantage. She capitalized on this lead to secure the first game at 21-15. In the second game, the Hyderabad native pushed hard, leaving no room for any comeback from the Japanese competitor.
Having recently married, Sindhu returned to competitive play with remarkable intensity, quickly establishing an 11-2 lead. She concluded the match after winning the second game 21-13, securing her place in the last eight of the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament.
“This was my first encounter with her, and there were numerous long rallies. I was well-prepared and pleased to give my 100 percent. Now, I need to recover for tomorrow and return even stronger,” Sindhu commented post-match.
Next, Sindhu is set to compete against the Paris Olympics bronze medallist Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from Indonesia on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Indian men's singles player Kiran George also made it to the quarterfinals after a solid performance against World No. 38 Alex Lanier from France, winning 22-20 and 21-13 in 46 minutes.
George will face Weng Hongyang from China in the quarterfinals on Friday.
In contrast, the Indian women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa faced a tough defeat, losing 9-21, 21-23 to Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in the Round of 16, becoming the fourth Indian doubles team to exit the tournament that day.
