New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu exited the ongoing India Open 2025 after suffering a defeat with scores of 9-21, 21-19, and 17-21 against Gregoria Tunjung, the bronze medallist from the Paris Olympics, during the women's singles quarterfinal of the BWF World Tour Super 750 event on Friday. The celebrated Indian shuttler put up a tough fight to push the match to a decider after losing the initial set 9-21, but Tunjung ultimately claimed victory.

After trailing 3-9 in the second game, the 29-year-old Sindhu made a remarkable comeback to level the score at 9 points and then secured a decider against the error-prone Indonesian player. In the final game, Tunjung advanced to the semifinals, where she will face Se Young An, the top seed from South Korea. The other semifinal will feature Pornpawee Chochuwong, the eighth seed from Thailand, against sixth-seed Tomoka Miyazaki.

All attention was on Sindhu on Friday as it marked her first tournament since her marriage. She aims to return to the top 10 but will have to wait a bit longer after her unanticipated exit from the India Open.

Previously, the former champion Sindhu overcame the rustiness from a lengthy competition break to secure a straight games victory over Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in the second round. Competing in her first tournament post-marriage in December last year, Sindhu faced challenges in finding her rhythm during the 51-minute match against an opponent experienced in both singles and doubles. However, the two-time Olympic medallist increased the tempo when it mattered, winning 21-14, 22-20.

On the same day, during the fourth day of the competition, Kiran George, who entered the main draw as a substitute due to withdrawals, fell to Weng Hong Yang of China 13-21, 19-21 in a 51-minute battle in the men's singles quarterfinals.

Earlier, Kiran had missed three match points and saved three himself before defeating Yushi Tanaka from Japan 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in an hour and 11 minutes during the opening round of the BWF World Tour Super 750 event. In the second round, Kiran triumphed over Alex Lanier from France with scores of 22-20, 21-13 to secure his spot in the quarterfinals.
