Tokyo, July 16 (NationPress) In the latest Japan Open Super 750 tournament held in Tokyo, two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu faced a disappointing early exit, losing in the first round on Wednesday. The 30-year-old, who is a former world champion, fell short against Korea's Sim Yu Jin with scores of 15-21, 14-21, marking her fifth first-round defeat this season and highlighting ongoing struggles with her performance.
Sindhu appeared to lack confidence and precision from the start, making numerous unforced errors and struggling with her length judgment. Although she showcased moments of resilience in the first game, Sim maintained her composure to clinch her first victory against the Indian star.
During the second game, Sindhu trailed early at 1-6. Although she managed to equalize at 11-11, she could not maintain the momentum as the Korean player pulled ahead decisively to finish the match in straight games.
On a brighter note for India, the men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked 15th globally, advanced to the second round with a dominant win, defeating Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Kim Dong Ju 21-18, 21-10 in just 42 minutes.
After a competitive start, the Indian duo found their rhythm, demonstrating their signature aggressive style and superior net play in the second game.
In men's singles, Lakshya Sen also progressed with ease, overcoming China's Wang Zheng Xing with scores of 21-11, 21-18. The world No. 18 displayed exceptional form, taking an early lead of 11-2 in the first game and maintaining control throughout the match. Though Xing fought back in the second game, Lakshya's initial momentum helped secure his victory.
The 22-year-old will face a tougher opponent in the round of 16 against Japan's seventh seed and local favourite, Kodai Naraoka.
