Bengaluru, Sep 5 (NationPress) Left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Nishant Sindhu took 5 wickets for 125 runs in his 47.2 overs, helping North Zone dismiss South Zone for 536 in their first innings at the end of day two during the Duleep Trophy semifinals at the BCCI COE Ground 1 on Friday.

For South Zone, vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter N. Jagadeesan scored an impressive 197 off 352 balls, featuring 16 fours and 2 sixes, putting his team in a solid position.

Besides Devdutt Padikkal’s contribution of 57 from the previous day, South Zone also received valuable fifties from Ricky Bhui (54) and Tanay Thyagarajan (58), with Salman Nizar and Gurjapneet Singh both adding 29 runs.

After starting the day at 297/3, South Zone lost Mohammed Azharuddeen (11) early on, but Jagadeesan and Bhui built a solid 87-run partnership for the fifth wicket off 194 balls. Jagadeesan narrowly escaped a dropped catch on 163 when Sindhu failed to grasp a challenging opportunity.

Unfortunately, Jagadeesan was run out just before lunch, falling three runs short of a remarkable double century due to a mix-up with Bhui. Following the break, Bhui reached his half-century but was soon dismissed by Sindhu, who struck in his first over of the second session.

Despite the losses of Bhui and Jagadeesan, South Zone continued to build their total with crucial contributions from the lower order. Thyagarajan and Gurjapneet formed a vital 63-run partnership, pushing South Zone past 500 before Sindhu returned to clean up the tail, concluding the innings while the rest of the North Zone bowlers struggled for wickets.

Brief scores:

South Zone 536 all out in 169.2 overs (N. Jagadeesan 197, Tanay Thyagarajan 58; Nishant Sindhu 5-125, Anshul Kamboj 2-67) against North Zone.
