Jannik Sinner Defeats Alex Michelsen to Advance in Miami Open
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Miami, March 25 (NationPress) World No. 2 Jannik Sinner triumphed over local competitor Alex Michelsen with a score of 7-5, 7-6(4), advancing to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and maintaining his quest for the prestigious ‘Sunshine Double’.
The 24-year-old Italian has now become only the third player to reach the quarterfinals in his first five attempts at the Miami Open, joining legends Yannick Noah and Stefan Edberg.
In a match lasting one hour and 42 minutes, Sinner managed to come back from a 2-5 deficit in the second set, extending his record of consecutive sets won at Masters 1000 events to an impressive 28.
“I think my serve was a significant factor today, particularly during crucial moments and in the tie-break, so I’m pleased with that. However, I recognize that to advance further in this tournament, I need to enhance my game from the baseline,” Sinner commented.
“Tomorrow will be a day off, which will be beneficial for me. I aim to find my rhythm during practice, and then we’ll see how things unfold,” he added.
“The conditions were completely different from last night, so I’m proud of how I fought. It was a very close match against Alex, a formidable opponent, and I’m glad with the outcome,” Sinner reflected.
He has now secured victories in his last 28 matches against American players, dating back to his defeat against Ben Shelton in Shanghai in 2023.
Earlier, Martin Landaluce continued his remarkable journey with another significant win, saving a match point in a thrilling 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 victory against home favourite Sebastian Korda to reach the quarterfinals.
The World No. 151, who trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy, has become the lowest-ranked player to reach the quarterfinals since Jim Grabb (World No. 185) in 1994. Landaluce is also the first player born in 2006 or later to make it to the last eight at a Masters 1000 event.
Having risen 48 spots to No. 103 in the ATP Live Rankings, Landaluce will next take on Jiri Lehecka, who caused an upset against World No. 7 Taylor Fritz.
