Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian Wells, March 11 (NationPress) World No. 2 Jannik Sinner triumphed over the determined Brazilian up-and-comer Joao Fonseca in a gripping match, securing his place in the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Open.
In their eagerly awaited first encounter, the 24-year-old Italian demonstrated his resilience during two nail-biting tie-breaks, winning 7-6(6), 7-6(4) before an enthusiastic crowd. This high-stakes clash hinted at the potential for a thrilling rivalry on the ATP Tour.
With this victory, Sinner advanced to the quarter-finals in 11 out of the 12 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments he has participated in since the start of 2024. This win also marked his 97th Masters 1000 match victory, surpassing fellow Italian Fabio Fognini for the most wins by an Italian at this level.
Sinner exhibited impressive composure in the opening set's tie-break, saving three set points and regaining momentum. Despite missing a chance to serve out the match at 5-2 in the second set, he showcased his best tennis at crucial moments in the tie-break to claim the win.
“Joao is an incredible player with immense talent and power from both sides. His serving was very effective,” Sinner remarked after the match. “I aimed to be as aggressive as possible, although I lost some intensity towards the end of the second set. He played outstanding tennis today, and the atmosphere was fantastic, so I’m thrilled with the outcome.”
The first set was tightly contested, with both players struggling to convert their break opportunities. Fonseca took control in the tie-break with a 5-2 lead, hitting several aggressive winners. However, Sinner responded with a vital mini-break using a deft drop-volley, ultimately winning the set by claiming five consecutive points.
Sinner seemed poised for an easier second set after breaking for a 4-2 lead, but Fonseca fought back, breaking the Italian when he served for the match at 5-3 and winning 12 of the next 14 points to force another tie-break.
Despite this, Sinner regained dominance at the crucial moment, closing out the tie-break by winning the last four points with a powerful forehand return.
Next, Sinner will face American rising star Learner Tien in the quarter-finals. The 20-year-old had earlier saved two match points to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and secure his spot in the final eight.
