Melbourne, Jan 18 (NationPress) World No.1 Jannik Sinner dominated American Marcos Giron in straight sets to progress to the fourth round, keeping his title defense aspirations alive at the Australian Open on Saturday.

The Italian star triumphed with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 under the dazzling lights of Rod Laver Arena. However, the 23-year-old aims to enhance his performance as he heads into the tournament's second week.

Sinner maintained unyielding pressure from the baseline, asserting his supremacy and improving his ATP head-to-head record against Giron to 2-0.

“I am very pleased to reach the next round. Each match presents unique challenges. Today, I felt he was quite solid from the back when serving. I still have areas to improve, but every victory is significant, especially in these conditions. I truly appreciate the incredible support; playing night sessions here is fantastic,” Sinner expressed during his post-match interview.

“My net game percentage wasn’t ideal today, but I’m working on it; it's part of the game. Some days I feel better than others, which is normal. Staying mentally focused is crucial. I hope to elevate my level in the next round, but I’m still very content,” he added.

After experiencing his first set loss since early October, Sinner bounced back with a stellar performance against home wild card Tristan Schoolkate in the second round, securing an early service break in every set against Giron. Despite dropping serve in the final set, he saved six of seven break points, according to Infosys Stats.

This victory, the fastest of his current Australian Open journey, boosts Sinner's confidence as he advances to the second week of a Grand Slam for the 15th time. A critical moment occurred when Sinner, serving for the second set, rallied from 0/30 to win four consecutive points, including two powerful forehand winners.

Ranked No. 46 in the ATP listings, Giron consistently pressured Sinner’s serve and achieved his first break to equalize the third set at 2-2. Nevertheless, Sinner quickly regained control, finishing the match strongly. With this win, he joins Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi as the only Italian men to reach the fourth round in Melbourne four times.

Sinner, a two-time Grand Slam champion, now shifts his focus to defending his title. He will face the winner of the third-round match between Miomir Kecmanovic and Holger Rune in the upcoming round.
