Turin, Nov 13 (NationPress) Reigning champion Jannik Sinner secured his spot in the semifinals of the ATP Finals by triumphing over Alexander Zverev for the third time within 17 days. The 24-year-old Italian showcased an impressive performance, clinching a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Sinner remains undefeated in the Bjorn Borg group with a record of 2-0, with a match against Ben Shelton still to come before the semifinals.
Sinner has now achieved five consecutive wins against the German player, bringing his ATP Head-to-Head record against Zverev to 6-4. Zverev's last victory over Sinner was during the 2023 US Open.
"I felt like I was serving very effectively during crucial moments. I aimed to deliver my best tennis when it counted, and fortunately, it worked out well for me," Sinner remarked.
"Both of us adjusted our tactics a bit, and I sensed we were both trying to hit with speed and precision. I’m quite pleased with my return against his serve, which is one of the toughest in the sport. The group I’m in, alongside Sascha and Ben, poses a great challenge in terms of returning serves," he added.
Sinner previously defeated Zverev in the Australian Open final, a recent three-set match in Vienna, and most recently by a commanding score of 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris, as reported by ATP.
Still in contention for the ATP Year-End No. 1 ranking, Sinner must emerge victorious this week while remaining unbeaten and hope that Alcaraz does not secure another win.
Alcaraz has already qualified for the semifinals and will face Sinner’s fellow countryman Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday.
Currently, Sinner is riding a 28-match winning streak on indoor hard courts since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals final. He has not dropped a single set in Turin. Last year, he made history as the first man to win the tournament without losing a set since 1986 (Ivan Lendl), according to ATP statistics.
