Ranchi, Jan 23 (NationPress) JSW Soorma Hockey Club is on the brink of securing a place in the final of the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25. To advance to the final of this inaugural league edition, they must earn at least one point against Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astroturf Hockey Stadium this Friday.
“Our strategy throughout this campaign has been to aim for victory in every match. Therefore, our current focus is solely on the upcoming match against the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers. This is our most critical game at this point, so we are concentrating on it step by step, and after that, we will plan our next moves. We still need to perform well in this next match,” said head coach Jude Menezes before the pivotal encounter.
Soorma has been performing exceptionally well in the league, sitting at the top of the table with three wins and one draw, totaling 10 points before their final pool match. Sonam has been a standout player, netting four goals in five matches, while Charlotte Englebert has contributed with two goals. Notably, all 11 of their goals have been scored from open play, as teams across the league have struggled to convert penalty corners.
“We are facing challenges with the initial trap. I believe most teams are experiencing similar difficulties, as evidenced by the low number of penalty corners scored by others as well. We need to continue working on this aspect, but we have a robust unit with our forwards and a compact defense. With the talent in our forward line, we are confident in our goal-scoring capabilities,” he elaborated.
In their previous encounter against the Tigers, Soorma overcame a one-goal deficit to achieve a convincing 4-1 victory. Players like Olivia Shannon, Charlotte Englebert, Captain Salima Tete, and Sonam all contributed to a remarkable team performance.
“Once again, our approach will focus on maximizing our opportunities in the shooting circle, aiming to score goals, and ensuring that we play an aggressive, free-flowing attacking style that aligns with our strengths,” he concluded.
