New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) Ireland all-rounder Sophie MacMahon has officially declared her retirement from international cricket after participating in 45 matches for the national squad.
Having debuted against England Women in a one-day game in Abu Dhabi in 2017, MacMahon, now 28, amassed a total of 45 appearances for Ireland Women.
The Leinster CC all-rounder is celebrated for her powerful batting and medium-paced bowling, consistently delivering a challenging length. Her highest score for Ireland was 42 in a One-Day International in Dublin in 2022 against a formidable South African bowling line-up.
“Deciding to retire is a difficult choice, but I believe the moment is right for me. I have dedicated so much of my life to cricket, and representing my nation in the sport I cherish will always be a treasured memory. As a child, my dream was to become a professional cricketer, and I feel incredibly fortunate that it has come true,” stated Sophie MacMahon.
“I am immensely grateful to all the staff and coaches at Cricket Ireland for their continuous support, especially the staff I collaborated with in the women’s program. I would like to extend my gratitude to my family for their unwavering support throughout my cricket journey.
“I am thankful for the opportunities I've had while playing for Ireland, especially the places I've visited and the people I've encountered. The highlight of my journey has been my teammates, and I will miss being part of such an extraordinary squad – yet I know I have made lifelong friends.”
With a personal best of 2-13 against Thailand in the Netherlands, she accumulated 21 wickets across all formats. MacMahon's last appearance for Ireland was against Zimbabwe in July 2025, where she recorded figures of 2-21. She was among the first seven players to receive full-time contracts for Ireland Women in 2019.
“Sophie has been an integral part of our team for the past eight years. She has journeyed with us through a significant transitional phase and has significantly shaped the team we are today,” remarked Gaby Lewis, captain of Ireland Women.
“We will miss her cricketing skills, but more so her character and the compassion she has always shown towards those around her. I can confidently say that she will be greatly missed, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
Sophie will continue her cricketing career at the club level with Leinster Cricket Club, but she will step away from domestic representative cricket in the Evoke Super Series.
