India's Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon have been retained in the International Cricket Council (ICC) elite panels of match referees and umpires for the 2026-27 international cricket season. The decision, announced following a comprehensive annual review by the ICC's Umpire Selection Panel, underscores continuity in global cricket officiating and reflects strong performance across formats and bilateral competition.

Recognition of consistency

ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta said the retention of both panels reflects "the consistency and high standards that have come to define officiating at the international level." He highlighted that members have demonstrated "a strong blend of accuracy, composure, and professionalism, which is critical to maintaining the integrity of the game." The CEO noted that what sets the panels apart is their ability to operate with clarity and confidence in high-pressure situations across all formats and conditions.

Selection process and criteria

The Umpire Selection Panel, chaired by ICC General Manager – Cricket Wasim Khan, reviewed performances over the past year before confirming the existing roster. The panel comprises Mike Riley (former English Premier League referee), Peter Manuel (former international umpire and coach), and Sanjay Manjrekar (former international player and commentator). Assessments focused on on-field accuracy, decision-making under pressure, third-umpiring quality, and professionalism in bilateral cricket and tournament play.

Recent performance benchmarks

The ICC cited standout performances at the recent ICC Men's T20 World Cup and across men's bilateral cricket throughout the previous calendar year as key factors in the retention decision. Officials demonstrated consistent application of cricket laws and maintained the sport's competitive integrity across varying conditions and match situations.

India's representation

Srinath remains the sole Indian representative on the Elite Panel of Match Referees, alongside Jeff Crowe (New Zealand), Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka), Andrew Pycroft (Zimbabwe), and Richie Richardson (West Indies). Menon is one of 12 umpires on the elite panel, which includes officials from Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Pakistan, Australia, and Bangladesh.

The ICC has signalled that the retained panels are expected to "build further on these standards" during the 2026-27 season, which will encompass bilateral series, regional tournaments, and potential ICC events.
